Putting Eye Alignment Drill

By Sam McKenney, Certified Golf Biomechanic, Teaching Professional, MGFI, TPI CGFI

This is a simple drill you can do in the comforts of your own home.  You will need three quarters, your putter, a 20-foot string, and a friend or a family member to help you with the drill.

  1. Putting Eye Alignment DrillTo begin, take two quarters and place them 20 feet apart on the floor.
  2. Set up your putter to one of the quarters as if you were going to putt toward the other quarter.
  3. While you are looking down your target line, tell your partner where to place the third quarter in the middle of the two placed quarters, so that it is directly in line with the other two.  The object is for you to look down the target line to test whether you see a straight line toward the other quarter.  Many times a player perceives the line to be to the left or right of the actual line toward the hole.
  4. To verify the test, run a string from the quarter you set up to, to the one 20 feet away to see where the middle quarter lay in relation to the target line.

If you do not get it on the target line, keep practicing the drill and you will train your eyes to look down the target line the correct way.
